On the eve of the Week-End here in #outsiders, this depiction by the New Yorker is ever so evident of the reality today as #POTUS hosted a lunch in the midst of a grim-faced Harry Reid and as the Speaker of the House warned # POTUS not to play with matches:

Notations On Our World: The Post-Mortem on the US Mid-Terms & Beyond
The post-mortems on the US Midterm Elections are in. We here @ The Daily Outsider have been assessing the post-mortems starting right at the elections thru today to assess it all.
Some brief takeaways are noted below:
- The Poll-Industrial Complex needs to have a radical rethink of how it approaches its' work in predicting results.
- The Media needs to go back to old fashioned fact checking and truly having a ground game to understand and debunk the pronouncements from all sides. It should not be only left to the Daily Show with Jon Stewart to work to debunk the outlandish statements from all sides.
- Leadership & messaging matters. The Democrats failed on both counts--including the President.
- The after effects of the disastrous Citizens United Decision continues to be felt--which according to the Washington Post was some $ 3.7 Billion Dollars.
- The GOP truly stepped up its' game and executed on its' ground strategy to maximum effect.
It has been touching to see commitment to work together as the President, The Speaker and the incoming US Senate Majority Leader. It was interesting how they chose the Wall Street Journal to publish their editorial on their commitment to work together while also warning the President on potential unilateral action the President might take. They say they want to get Congress moving again--but both the US Senate and the US House have a committed band of firebrands who believe that Government is the real problem--although the commitment by Senator McConnell that there will be no Government shutdown nor a default in the National Debt should serve as some reassurance to the World. Kansas was the surprise as a Governor whose policies have led the State to near bankruptcy and a Senator who does not even own a home in the State were resoundingly re-elected despite all the so-called polls by the Poll Industrial Complex. It was the case nationwide. California was an exception--even though even in California The GOP was able to take a number of legislative seats to deny the Democrats the 2/3 majority.
A sampling of the "post-mortem" is noted below Starting with analysis by the Washington Post:

No one was quite prepared for just how convincingly Republican candidates' would trounce their opponents in Tuesday's midterm. In races across the country, Republicans won where the polls showed them ahead, and even in a few places where the polls didn't.
None of these surprises are more significant than Gov. Sam Brownback's reelection in Kansas. Sam Wang at the Princeton Election Consortium confidently predicted he would lose. At Five Thirty Eight, Harry Enten had given Brownback an 18 percent chance of victory. In the end, it wasn't even that close: Brownback won even 50 percent of the vote to Democrat Paul Davis's 46.1 percent.
Predictions are sometimes wrong, of course -- that, in itself, shouldn't be too surprising. What makes Kansas an interesting case is that Brownback implemented and campaigned on an aggressively conservative economic policy, a series of supply-side reductions in taxes that have created an expanding budget deficit. These tax cuts lead Kansans to close classrooms, fire teachers, increase class sizes and raise local property levies. Hundreds of Republicans, worried about the state's financial stability, turned against him, but he won without their support.
The Democratic Governors Association's Spin is noted below:
Mike – Simply put, Election Day wasn’t what we hoped for. But with your support, the Democratic Governors Association still scored some victories we should be proud of.
In Pennsylvania, Governor-elect Tom Wolf became the first candidate ever to defeat a Pennsylvania governor seeking reelection.
And in Rhode Island, we helped Gina Raimondo become the first woman governor in her state’s history and one of only two Democratic women governors nationwide.
The Republican Governors Association came hard after four Democrats, and three of them – Governors Dan Malloy, John Hickenlooper, and Maggie Hassan – won reelection.
We did all this and more while facing strong headwinds and more than $100 million in spending from the RGA. We fought back through the power of grassroots donors: over 125,000 gifts from over 70,000 people giving $10, $20, $25, whatever they could afford. You were the difference.
Day one of the 2016 cycle has started, and we’re back at work. We’ll fight to create jobs, promote equality, and pass equal pay. With your help, 2016’s going to be a whole lot better.
Let’s fight on,

Erik Erickson, though, was very very very happy as he noted his take on what happened On November 4 while being quite harsh yet amusing to read:
An "Outsiders" Newsflash: On #Iran, The Temple Mount, the US & Israel as #Obama sent letter to Iran's Khamenei, kept Israel in the dark - Diplomacy and Defense Israel News | Haaretz
The alleged Obama Letter reported by Haaretz is quite an interesting development especially as the Republicans are poised to take power in Congress. It has been quite a week in US Political Circles. This is as Jerusalem has seen a spate of attacks and the Israeli Prime Minister is working feverishly to calm tensions by assuring King Abdullah of Jordan that the status of the Temple Mount will not Change:
Obama sent letter to Iran's Khamenei, kept Israel in the dark - Diplomacy and Defense Israel News | Haaretz
What is further interesting is what the Israeli Foreign Minister has said on Right Wing Israeli Politicians provoking further tensions as he : " berated right-wing politicians for exploiting tensions in Jerusalem, telling Israel Radio on Thursday that Israeli ministers and MKs visiting the Temple Mount was "idiocy" and was driven by "cheap headline seeking." It is worth noting here as Mr. Lieberman has been at the forefront of stoking of the very tensions during his zealous advocacy of more harsh action during Israeli Operations in Gaza that has ended up costing Israel some $ 2 Billion in direct costs alone.
Ever so challenging times as we here @ #Outsiders continue to assess the post-election landscape in the US and its' implications for the World....

On Election Eve In the United States: Brief Thoughts & A "Thought 4 the Week"
It is Election Eve in the United States and the pundits are at it ever more. It was interesting how Rachel Maddow on MSNBC What is interesting as it comes down to the wire is this: No one knows--although the polling-industrial complex has been quite busy with the Princeton Election Consortium coming out with its "final" forecast:
It will be truly an interesting night and we will have to see where it all goes as we remember these admonitions:

&
What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us;
what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.
- Albert Pike
What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?
- George Eliot
To leave the world a better place,
to know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived,
this is to have succeeded.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul
than the way in which it treats its children.
- Nelson Mandela
We must remember that one determined person can make
a significant difference,
and that a small group of determined people
can change the course of history.

Notations For the Week-End (II): On Politics, Climate Change & What We can Do
It is election eve in the United States. It was timely as TED curated a series of talks to underscore a sense of faith that can be restarted in politics. It was also a disturbing 24 hours as the IPCC came out with its' stark warning that time was running out for Mother Earth. Will faith be restored in politics after November 4? Will leaders have the wisdom to overcome petty differences for peace in the Middle East as Secretary Kerry goes back to the Middle East yet again? Will the leaders embrace and realize the reality at hand so that we as humans won't have to deal with this: https://interstellar.withgoogle.com/?
Stark choices....
Stark choices....
Why not sooner? Will we have the courage? That's the ? :-( Fossil fuels should be phased out by 2100 says #IPCC http://t.co/6Xcl6fMAG2

Notations For the Week-End: On the Dawn of November 2014 (On #Africa, #Elections & #Hope)
Burkina Faso was the latest country consumed in the continued tragic twists and turns that Africa continues to face. This underscores the challenge faced in Africa right now:
As this has ensued, there has been the continued Ebola epidemic that has raged on which has derailed the incremental progress Liberia has made since the end of the civil war and the murderous reign of Charles Taylor who is now langushing in Prison in the UK. Ebola has reached US shores and the politicization of Ebola has been underscored with statements by the President and the dilemma of the nurse in Maine who has defied a voluntary quarantine order to the displeasure of Maine's Governor. As the United States is entering the mid-term elections, what one hopes is that some semblance of comity prevails so that the business of Government continues in lieu of some pressing deadlines that we here @ "Outsiders" commented on earlier.
As we here @ Outsiders commend all who have stepped up to engage in the political process, we hope that all will remember these admonitions that +Jonathan Huie shared in his outreach to his community is ever so crucial so as to make a solemn commitment to work together because the World will be watching as challenges abound ever more--we remain hopeful:

Thought For the Week: On the Need to #Laugh & Be Ever So Thankful
It is Halloween in the United States. As we get ready to go "dark" for the Week-End here in #Outsiders and gear up for the elections, we hope this courtesy of - Jonathan Lockwood Huie- will be enjoyed by all. The need to laugh and be grateful for life is ever more important. We also urge all in the United States to vote in the elections that is coming up on November 4.
Onward!!!!
The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter.
- Mark Twain
Laugh at yourself and at life.
Not in the spirit of derision or whining self-pity,
but as a remedy, a miracle drug, that will ease your pain,
cure your depression, and help you to put in perspective
that seemingly terrible defeat and worry
with laughter at your predicaments,
thus freeing your mind to think clearly
toward the solution that is certain to come.
Never take yourself too seriously.
- Og Mandino
Become more and more innocent,
less knowledgeable and more childlike.
Take life as fun - because that's precisely what it is!
- Osho
Consciously adopt the mindset of a young child,
to whom all of life is a grand adventure.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie
View of the Week: On #Israel, #Palestine & Other Thoughts
It has been another challenging day throughout the World. Israel just recalled its' Ambassador from Sweden after Sweden recognized Palestine. This happened after Mr. Lieberman, the Israeli Foreign Minister, noted that Sweden did not understand the Middle East because it is a lot more complex than an IKEA furniture. The ever eloquent Swedish Foreign Minister responded in kind and we commented on it earlier on Facebook:
As someone who has built out IKEA furniture, the Swedish Foreign Minister is absolutely dead on. The lessons of IKEA is a lesson to be learnt by all.
