The Friday Musical Interlude: #WeAreHome

It is Friday here in #Outsiders and once again time for the Friday Musical Interlude. In the midst of the debate over Muslims, we thought this wonderful video by #Raef--our artist of the week-- underscored what America was about--our founder was so excited about this he was sharing it with his immediate network and sharing it as he was on the "Grid" throughout the day. The message is clear and we must all embrace it:

Notations On Our World: On #Syria & the Refugee Challenge and What #Canada is Doing....

Syrian Refugees have begun to arrive in Canada.   This headline was just beautiful and our team wanted to share it to underscore the humanity of Canada:

Toronto Star cover reading

The Canadian Prime Minister made it a point of welcoming Refugees to Toronto as the first military planes arrived:

Syrian refugees are greeted by Canada"s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (L) on their arrival from Beirut at the Toronto Pearson International Airport

As this was going on north of the border in the United States, the US Congress was busy at work finalizing legislation on Visa Waivers.    There has been a massive movement on Social Media--for instance one online actvist organized a group called HR158 on Facebook that has mushroomed to some 36,000 members so far.   Groups like PAAIA and NIAC have mobilibzed their supporters in order to write letters, make phone calls and spread the word on the discriminatory nature of the legislation.   What we have also found extremely disturbing is the efforts in Texas as we note the following from the Texas Governor's Website:

Momentum Continues To Build In Support Of State Refugee Security Act
Following Governor Greg Abbott’s work with Senator Ted Cruz on the State Refugee Security Act, which gives states and governors the tools to reject the resettlement of a refugee in that state unless there is adequate assurance that the refugee does not present a security risk, Congressman Ted Poe (R-TX), Chairman of the Terrorism Subcommittee, introduced and filed H.R. 4197, the companion bill to S. 2363 (State Refugee Security Act).

Governor Abbott Issues Statement Supporting Attorney General's Request To Halt Syrian Refugee Resettlement In Texas
Governor Greg Abbott issued the following statement in support of Attorney General Ken Paxton’s decision to renew their efforts to seek emergency relief from Syrian refugees coming to Texas.

We will continue to assess this over the ensuing days.

Notations On Our World: On The US Political Scene

As we write this, we're going to be joining a panel of undecided voters in Georgia put together by Erick Erickson which should be interesting to get a sense of the state of the Republican Primary as the countdown to the Primary is before us:

We wanted to also report on this from the Washington Post that was quite interesting on their take on Donald Trump.   Our view is that his path to the Presidency is next to non-existent as he continues to make headlines as reflected below:

It’s not chaos. It’s Trump’s campaign strategy.

Notations On Our World: On #HR158 and the ensuing debate

In response to the San Bernardino Attack that claimed the lives of 14 innocent souls, the US House of Representatives has just adopted HR158 that has some very troubling provisions also being debated in the US Senate.   There has been a concerted grass roots effort as epitomized by this received at our World Headquarters--We will continue to monitor this over the ensuing days.

Just Foreign Policy

Urge Pres. Obama & Congress to put a time limit on the discriminatory provisions of the visa waiver bill.

Take Action

On December 8, the House voted for a bill to tighten the Visa Waiver Program that lets people from certain countries travel to the U.S. without first obtaining a visa.Mike HondaBarbara LeeJohn ConyersJan SchakowskyRaul Grijalva, and Keith Ellison were among the Democrats who voted against the bill, [1] citing discriminatory and overbroad provisions of the bill, and the lack of a time limit on these provisions.

Urge President Obama and Congress to "sunset" the discriminatory provisions of the visa waiver reform bill by signing our petition at MoveOn:

http://www.justforeignpolicy.org/act/sunset-discrimination-in-visa-waiver-bill

Rep. Honda said he voted against this bill because it "unjustly targets individuals based on their nationality" and that he could not "vote for a bill that categorically bars access to the Visa Waiver Program for dual nationals of Iraq, Syria, Sudan, and Iran and people who have traveled in the last 5 years to Iraq and Syria, including humanitarian workers…Under this bill, a French citizen of Syrian descent who has never been to Syria would still fall into this blanket category.” [2]

Rep. Lee said she shares “the concerns of the ACLU, AILA, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and others that this bill would allow for the discrimination of individuals based on their nationality." [3]

Rep. Conyers said, "I believe the provisions in the legislation restricting the use of the visa waiver program to individuals who have travelled to Syria or Iraq or are dual nationals of these or other covered nations – are discriminatory…I also believe the provision should have included a sunset date so we can assess its efficacy." [4]

Like Rep. Conyers, the ACLU has called for the discriminatory provisions of the legislation to have a sunset provision [5], meaning that they would expire and have to be reconsidered and reauthorized to remain in force - just like the Patriot Act, passed after the September 11 attacks, had a sunset provision so it would have to be reconsidered. Likewise, every major Democratic proposal for an authorization for the use of force against ISIS, including President Obama's proposal [6], has a sunset provision, so that it could not continue indefinitely without Congress having to reconsider it.

It is very likely that some version of the bill will be included in the omnibus spending package expected to be passed by December 18Urge President Obama and Congress to sunset the discriminatory provisions of the visa waiver reform bill by signing and sharing our petition:

Here is a very quick update on the Visa Waiver bill that threatens to force Iranian Americans into a seperate process for traveling to Europe.

As we speak, Senate leaders are negotiating with the House on whether or not to include discriminatory language in a government spending measure that must pass by TOMORROW.

Will you call your lawmakers before they reach the funding bill deadline on Dec. 11?

The Senate's phones need to start ringing off the hook now so that they get the message loud and clear that the discriminatory language must not be included in that funding bill.

So far, you have sent over 29,000 emails to lawmakers. From what we are hearing on the Hill, the message is starting to get through. But as it stands, the discriminatory language remains in the bill. We need to turn up the temperature now with urgent action to get it removed.

Please call your Senators right now and tell them not to include the discriminatory language in the funding bill.

Follow this link for the call-in tool that will connect you to your two Senators.

Then, just follow this simple three-step script:
  • Hi, I'm calling from [your city] to urge my Senator to oppose a Visa Waiver proposal that discriminates against Iranian American dual-nationals.
  • Lawmakers are threatening to add this bill to the annual government funding bill. Congress must not follow the path of Donald Trump.
  • Please oppose the discriminatory language in this bill and make sure it does not get added to the government funding bill.
NIAC Action is in contact with Senate offices, the White House and embassies to work to stop this dangerous legislation. We are fighting an uphill battle, but there is still time to win this.

We need your help to keep this bill from becoming law. Call your lawmakers now.
Take Action
Thank you for all that you do.
Best,

Elham Khatami

An #Outsider Newsflash: Speaker Ryan Speaks Out Against @RealDonaldTrump

As we went to Presss, The Most Senior Republican in the US Government, spoke out forcefully against the pronoucement by Mr. Trump yesterday and we are pleased to release this Tweet released to the Speakers Twitter Account released with the past hour:

As our founder always notes in his comments, "We Shall Overcome".

Notations On Our World: On The US Political Scene w/The Latest From @RealDonaldTrump

It has been an extremely challenging 24 hours as Donald Trump called for the total and complete shutdown of Muslim Immigration.     The debate has been fierce.  What we decided to do to was to feature in its' entirety Professor Jonathan Turley of Georgetown Law School's reputation of what we view as an absurd and inhumane declaration:

Trump Calls For “Total and Complete Shutdown” of Muslims Entering The United States

Immigration policy has cleared resonated as a draw for Trump. However, this proposal would openly embrace raw prejudice and blind rage as motivating factors for governmental policy. It would clearly fail in deny reentry for citizens or residents. As for non-citizens abroad, they are accorded protections under international law. Under Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, people have the right to leave or enter a country and that “everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.” There is no doubt murky aspects to such rights and a long-standing question of their enforceability. However, this proposal rests on flagrant religious discrimination against one group. It seeks to “protect” the United States by denying the very essence of who we are as a nation.
For us,the final statement said it all as he underscored the unconstitutional nature of it all.  But, he came out and noted that , "I don't care".       There was a concern as to whether to call this outright fascism--but in fact it is.   Someone on Facebook released this very chilling comparsion:

As we went to press, we received reports that The House of Representatives is about the fast track passage of HR158 that according to NIAC Action, "..revises the Visa Waiver Program – the program that enables citizens to travel within 38 countries including the U.S., Europe, Japan, and South Korea, without a visa. Under the bill, dual-nationals from Iran, Syria, Iraq, and Sudan or anyone who has travelled to those countries in the past five years would be barred from the program...."       We will be following these on-going developments over the ensuing days with this final thought which all must take note of:

Notations On Our World (W-End Edition): On The Middle East

The Saban Forum was on in Washington that featured a number of leading lights in the diplomatic and political space.    This was also a week that saw the IAEA come out underscoring that Iran prior to 2009 was on a weaponization track that in turn prompted the Israeli Prime Minister to come out to call for a vigorous inspection regime to be enforced.

As we have been assessing the Middle East this week, what we found quite striking was a column by Ahmad Melhm that was published in Al Monitor where he noted that, "...Tony Blair's Chance to play a political role in the Palestinian issue is slipping away....'.     His role was Non-Existent to begin with in our view and we understand that he has resigned anway.        Blair has also profited handsomely as a result of his forays into the Middle East.

Beyond Blair, the speech by the US Secretary of State was quite noteworthy.   John Kerry  noted the predicament at the Saban Forum where he noted that the reality of the One State Solution is ever more evident now--and to consider the perils.       Although as we went to press, the Israeli Prime Minister noted that the solution is not one state, but a demilitraized Palestinian State--being what we view as implicity dismissive of the Secretary of State's criticism.         What was critical was this that was published in a Full Page New York Times Ad which underscored what John Kerry noted:

It was of note that Mr. Lepid, the Former FInance Minister and one of the key opposition leaders noted at the Same forum that the Palestinian Problem has to be solved.     IF the Palestinian Authority collapses and people turn to even more radical means, the Israeli Political Establishment seems not to have an answer--as the daily attacks continue.

Beyond Israel, though, there is Lebanon.   Lebanon may finally have a new President--who happens to be friends with Bashar Assad which may signal a return of the former Prime Minister Said Harriri who is now in self-imposed exile in France.

As we also went to press, we wanted to note and share this latest development  that finally there were some arrests in Israel in regards to the Palestinian Family arson murder case.    We will continue to monitor this case here in #Outsiders.   This was also of note courtesy of the "Forward" which we wanted to report on:

OPINION
J.J. Goldberg
Escalating disputes between Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel’s security chiefs point to a collapsing national consensus. J.J. Goldberg calls it an existential battle for the future of the Jewish state.

Notations For the Week-End: On #Guns

As the debate over Guns rages on in the United States, our team was shocked to it's core as it reviewed the speech by the President of Liberty University, Jerry Falwell Jr., as it called for all students to arm to take out "those muslims".  He sought to clarify it further and underscore how all faiths attended Liberty and he estimated approximately 15 to 20 Muslims attended his University.    This was in pale comparision to what Erik Erickson did yesterday as the New York Times came out with a rare Front Page Editorial calling for Gun Violence to once in for all stop.

In an Email, Mr. Erickson asked that his "image" be sent out to the World.    We have decided not to accomodate him in this quest because we are of the view that what he did went against everything he claimed in his email as he professed his love of the US Constitution--even though it has gone "Viral".   It is also just as unfortunate as we see other commentators somehow buy into his narrative as underscored by this released by Professor Jonathan Turley to his blog:

President Obama Reportedly Preparing Unilateral Gun Control Regulation As Response To Recent Shootings

by jonathanturley
SseudqLThe New York Daily News has a controversial front page this morning blasting politicians and others who are offering prayers while opposing to take steps to curtail gun access in this country in the wake of the latest massacre in California. It is the same message sent by President Barack Obama who appears ready to use executive authority to restrict gun sales at gun shows. The problem with calls for such action is that Congress has declined to order such changes -- raising yet another potential conflict over executive overreach in our system.  Moreover, the right to own firearms is now recognized as an individual right under the Second Amendment, limiting the extent to which gun ownership can be meaningfully curtailed. Absent a constitutional amendment, many of the calls for banning gun ownership would fail as unconstitutional.

He underscored his view that, ".....It should be striking to every American citizen that the New York Times believes the nation should have unfettered abortion rights, a right not made explicit in the Constitution, but can have the Second Amendment right curtailed at will though it is explicitly in the Constitution....Again, we have suffered the worst terrorist attack in more than a decade and the New York Times believes now we must have our rights taken away as a response to terrorism..."     But as a lawyer he should know this--and we fully concur: "...No right is unlimited and immune from reasonable regulation....". That's the bottom line and someone with a law degree, he and others need to understand that.       What is ever more unfortunate is that America is not even trying--and Nicholas Kristoff noted this in his Column.

As We have decided to feature the editorial in its' entirety for all to judge for themselves, we could not help but wonder what would move America--Sandy Hook didn't, the shooting of a Congressman didn't--what would, then?
CreditDoug Mills/The New York Times
All decent people feel sorrow and righteous fury about the latest slaughter of innocents, in California. Law enforcement and intelligence agencies are searching for motivations, including the vital question of how the murderers might have been connected to international terrorism. That is right and proper.
But motives do not matter to the dead in California, nor did they in Colorado, Oregon, South Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut and far too many other places. The attention and anger of Americans should also be directed at the elected leaders whose job is to keep us safe but who place a higher premium on the money and political power of an industry dedicated to profiting from the unfettered spread of ever more powerful firearms.
It is a moral outrage and a national disgrace that civilians can legally purchase weapons designed specifically to kill people with brutal speed and efficiency. These are weapons of war, barely modified and deliberately marketed as tools of macho vigilantism and even insurrection. America’s elected leaders offer prayers for gun victims and then, callously and without fear of consequence, reject the most basic restrictions on weapons of mass killing, as they did on Thursday. They distract us with arguments about the word terrorism. Let’s be clear: These spree killings are all, in their own ways, acts of terrorism.

Opponents of gun control are saying, as they do after every killing, that no law can unfailingly forestall a specific criminal. That is true. They are talking, many with sincerity, about the constitutional challenges to effective gun regulation. Those challenges exist. They point out that determined killers obtained weapons illegally in places like France, England and Norway that have strict gun laws. Yes, they did.
But at least those countries are trying. The United States is not. Worse, politicians abet would-be killers by creating gun markets for them, and voters allow those politicians to keep their jobs. It is past time to stop talking about halting the spread of firearms, and instead to reduce their number drastically — eliminating some large categories of weapons and ammunition.
It is not necessary to debate the peculiar wording of the Second Amendment. No right is unlimited and immune from reasonable regulation.
Certain kinds of weapons, like the slightly modified combat rifles used in California, and certain kinds of ammunition, must be outlawed for civilian ownership. It is possible to define those guns in a clear and effective way and, yes, it would require Americans who own those kinds of weapons to give them up for the good of their fellow citizens.
What better time than during a presidential election to show, at long last, that our nation has retained its sense of decency?

On this #Outsider Week-End......

As we here in the United States once again are faced with another tragic mass shooting, the debate on what to do rages on.     As our team was tending to the AM review, we could not help but be shocked as we saw reports of 10,000 Guns being seized in South Carolina.    The NRA, though, was not silent as it came out lashing out at those who advocate "Gun Control".    We are pleased here @ #Outsiders when we note that we're one of those who oppose the NRA because we believe that we can do better.   The #NRA was in full force yesterday over Twitter on this question.

We do begin this #Outsiders week-end with this courtesy of +Jonathan Huie as we wish all a fabulous weekend:
