An "Outsider" Newsflash: Jon Stewart Stepping Down

We @ #Outsiders saw the reports on Jon Stewart stepping down from his role as host of the  Daily Show on Comedy Central.   We here @ #Outsiders are a fan and have featured a number of his clips throughout our "#Notations".      He has been an inspiration for us in many ways and helped to inspire guys like Bassam Yousef and others over the ensuing years.  We also were ever so impressed with his work in Rosewater.  Even though it did not gain traction for the Oscars, the story was powerful in underscoring the War against Journalism that he ever so valiantly defended.    We will have more to say on it here in #Outsiders soon.

In tribute to him and his friend (whose program is banned in Egypt), we feature this clip that we believe underscores how the true realities are ever so.

Notations From the Grid: On Israel, Islam & All that "Jazz".....

The drama over The Prime Minister of Israel's pending speech before Congress continues.  Rumours have been circulating that he may cancel his speech.   He came out swinging noting that he would speak for all the Jews.  +J Street which we here @ #Outsiders are proud to support has begun a petition that our founder decided to add his name to:

What is also even more ironic is how he has attacked one of the leading newspapers in Israel over the questioning of his dealings (including the so called Bottlegate Affair) and now a new one--a $ 5200 Dinner Tab.    It was quite funny (but at the same time tragic) as this was reported on in +i24news EN earlier today and noted during the daily rounds "On the Grid":

The petty nature of this underscores a sense of desperation that apparently is before the Israeli Prime Minister.   The +Haaretz הארץ Amir Oren was ever so perceptive as he noted this recently.   All indications of his record leaves a lot to be desired as one recent statistic underscored how Israel is among the worst performing countries in the index of performance as noted by the Organization for Economc Cooperation & Development (OECD).    Beyond that, how the Arabs of Israel have been treated is even worst--which prompted a rebuke from President Rivlin.   It is also of profound concern how The US Congress and the Speaker of the House seem to have shown no regard.   It was poignant that President Obama noted if Angela Merkel was facing an election, she would not invited to the White House as they conferred over the War in Ukraine.

It is fitting, though, to end this edition of "notations" with this from the New York Times:

It is a fabulous read that underscores how all must go "beyond the now" and go beyond the "noise".

View of the Week: Life Lessons From Pope Francis

On the eve of a new Week @ Outsiders,  we wanted to begin with this from the "Grid" on a perceptive view of one of the most remarkable men in our World today:

We look forward to commentaries on the on-going key focus points throughout the channels of #Outsiders throughout the Week.

Notations For the Week-End: On Quite a Challenge Week....

It has been a tough week in our World as the World has been witness yet again to the brutality of Dayesh (also known as IS) and the raging wars in Syria and Nigeria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has reported that 210,000 people have died--that's almost 1% of the Syrian Population as noted by +i24news EN:

AFP

It was a disturbing as we saw reports of Nigeria postponing Presidential Polls because troops are not available to protect polls as they are engaged in a fight with the Boko Haram.   It is quite ironic as we also reviewed reports on the missing $ 20 Billion in Nigeria as the Nigerian Army continues to suffer--despite being Africa's largest Economy.

We also were quite amused to see a report recently on +i24news EN on how ineffective John Kerry has been as Secretary of State.    No recent Secretary of State has had to deal with so much in his inbox as Secretary Kerry.    We hope to have comments on it soon:   He has been hardly back in the United States for Months and is in Munich right now.    What was reflected in the International New York Times does reflect this continued concern:
As we reflected upon the ever so challenging World before us, we ran across this on the "GRID":
If anything, our hope is that #Outsiders can live up to this admonition.

Notations On our World Today: Brief Thoughts on #Ukraine & #Iran

Our World continues to be ever so complex.   As we have gone to press for today's edition of "Notations on our World", we have been assessing the war in Ukraine.    John Kerry is now in Kiev and the President of France and the Chancellor of Germany are due in Kiev and Moscow.    United States is also assessing arming Ukraine--and the Russians are on the record noting that they would consider it a threat.

Beyond Ukraine,  there is Iran.    The Prime Minister of Israel is due in Washington to speak for more sanctions.   It was quite an eye opener as this was reported by Haaretz:

The Prime Minister of Israel has rejected all criticism of this.    We also had reached out selected Members of Congress and recently received this "cookie cutter" responose from Senator Feinstein's Office:

Dear Mr. Pouraryan:

Thank you for contacting me regarding U.S. policy towards Iran.  I appreciate hearing from you on this important topic, and I welcome the opportunity to respond.  I support our existing sanctions against Iran, but oppose adding more sanctions at this time in order to give diplomacy a chance; let me explain why.

I remain deeply concerned about Iran's nuclear program, and I strongly believe that Iran must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.  As a result, I have supported significant sanctions against Iran in recent years in an effort to compel its government to come to the negotiating table in earnest.

It is abundantly clear that economic sanctions have placed Iran's economy under severe pressure.  Iran's crude oil exports have declined from 2.5 million barrels per day to about 1 million; its economy shrank by 5.8 percent in 2013; inflation, unemployment and underemployment have all increased dramatically; and Iran's government is now running a budget deficit as high as $36 billion per year.

Faced with the economic pressure imposed by our sanctions coupled with international isolation, last year Iran elected a new President, Hassan Rouhani, who campaigned in support of improving the economy, establishing better relations with the world, and increasing nuclear transparency.  Recognizing that Iran's economy cannot improve while our sanctions limit Iran's oil exports and choke its international trade, President Rouhani has finally brought Iran to the negotiating table.

On November 24, 2013, Iran and the P5+1 countries (the U.S., China, Russia, the U.K., France, and Germany) concluded an interim nuclear agreement—known as the Joint Plan of Action—that freezes Iran's nuclear program in place in exchange for limited, reversible sanctions relief.  The interim agreement came into force on January 20, 2014, and has been extended until November 24, 2014.  This time will allow negotiations to continue toward a binding, comprehensive nuclear agreement that ensures Iran will never develop nuclear weapons.

While no option should be removed from the table, I strongly support diplomatic efforts to resolve concerns about Iran's nuclear program.  I believe this Joint Plan of Action represents the best opportunity to peacefully curtail Iran's nuclear program that I have seen in a decade.  There has been a recent effort to immediately impose additional sanctions against Iran and to require unrealistic concessions from Iran.  I concur with the judgment of the Intelligence Community that such sanctions would undermine the prospect of a diplomatic solution.  That is why I oppose Iran sanction legislation at this time.

Please be assured that I am very closely monitoring Iranian compliance with the interim nuclear deal and ongoing negotiations.  I have carefully noted your views, and I will keep your thoughts in mind as I continue to discuss and debate U.S. policy towards Iran with my Senate colleagues and the Obama Administration.

Once again, thank you for writing.  I hope that you will continue to keep me informed about issues of importance to you.  Should you have any further comments or questions, please feel free to contact my Washington, D.C., office at (202) 224-3841, or visit my website at www.feinstein.senate.gov.  Best regards.

Sincerely yours,

  Dianne Feinstein
         United States Senator

Notations From the Grid: On the Arab Revolutions and The Fallen

While assessing the state of affairs "on the grid", we noted these which we wanted to note:

The historical context in which the transformation in societies has occurred is worth noting especially as we see the continued repression in Egypt.    Just today, another mass sentence was handed down by the so-called Judiciary in Egypt as some 230 people were sentenced to life in prison.  Among those receiving life sentences was the activist Ahmad Duma who had, among other things, actually welcomed the demise of the Muslim Brotherhood.   It is a loss to figure out how to explain this one.

What was done by +Muslims For Progressive Values underscores the true voice of all who believe in peace and we decided to share this in today's edition of Notations from the Grid:

May the souls of all the fallen RIP, grant their families the strength and the solace to deal with their loss.     We shall overcome.

Notations On Our World: On The Savagery of Dayesh (#IS)

It is a distressing day yet again as we were yet again witness to the merchants of death  of Dayesh (also known as IS/Islamic State) as their latest act of brutality was reported by the World:

The savagery of Dayesh  is beyond words.    The images of the Sister and the Wife of the pilot in anguish was heart-wrenching as captured by the BBC:

The wife (right) and sister (centre) of Moaz al-Kasasbeh protest in Amman, 28 January

Jordan's King Abdullah is in Washington and is due to speak at any moment as he is cutting his visit short.     The mood in Jordan itself was captured by this perceptive Tweets which we here @ #Outsiders were privileged to share as well:

We here @ #Outsiders join all in expressing our profound condolences to the family of this hero pilot and the entire Jordanian Nation.      We've seen reports that some of the deathrow prisoners will be executed in retailiation.

We know his sacrifice and his family's sacrifice will not be in vain.   We are all Moaz al-Kasasbeh

Notations From the "Grid": On the Latest on #FreeAJStaff & #Egypt

As we assessed the overnight developments, we saw this courtesy of the Independent of London:

It may well have been an agonizing decision by Mr. Fahmy-We believe that he can continue the fight in a more effective way by being out of Prison.  .   The Canadian Foreign Minister underscored this earlier.   However, Baher Mohammad's fate will continue to be unclear due to the fact that he does not have a Western Passport.   Sahar Aziz, the President of the Egyptian American Rule of Law Association, was ever so eloquent as she appeared on Al Jazeera underscoring the despicable state of Egypt's Judiciary.   One of the key things she  noted was that Egypt had already won by the concessions it had  gotten out of Qatar as Al Jazeera Mobasher was cut off.

As we await further developments, a bomb went off in Cairo and a number of bombs were discovered at Cairo Airport.   The insurgents are bringing the fight to the center of power in Egypt.

Notations On Our World (2/2/2015): A Challenging & Reflective Morning

It was gratifying to see the Al Jazeera Correspondent as he reflected upon his release:

It was striking how how he reflected upon what he looked forward to:  Watching a Sunset & having sand underneath his feet and spending time with his family.   We look forward to him getting back on the beat soon.    We here @ #outsiders have been privileged to join the World Wide Campaign to keep the spotlight on Egypt over the past 400+Days and will continue to do so.    It was heart wrenching as we saw the interview with Baher Mohammad's Wife and her anugish at being left behind.   I hope the Al Jazeera Team underscores the simple fact:  he will not be forgotten as Mohammad Fahmy won't be either.   We understand that the price for Mohammad Fahmy's Release is for him to revoke his Egyptian Citizenship.    Our view is that holding a simple passport will not define him and will await his release as well.

The tragedy of Egypt is continuing as 183 Egyptians were sentenced to death.  The same Judge who had sentenced the Al Jazeera Three (and we understand the others in absentia) handed down the sentence.     What was laughable was how Sisi was so proud of Egypt's Judiciary--this is the same judiciary that found Mubarak and his sons not guilty and even the highest court in Egypt found flaws with the verdict itself.    This is also as Egypt continues its' heavy handed tactics in the Sinai and throughout Egyptian cities.

Beyond the tragedy of Egypt, there is Israel.  The campaign has begun in earnest and the back and forth is becoming intense.   As the right has accused the so-called left of bringing so-called Obama Operatives, the Right (and Likud specifically) have brought on a so-called New Media Maven to help with the campaign as noted in our daily feed "over the grid" this morning:

It is also quite striking that the Polling-Industrial Complex is also hard at work in Israel.   The latest published by +Haaretz.com is showing the Israeli Prime Minister at 26 Seats.  It is said that Labor will gain 23 Seats.      This is as the controversy over the Israel Prime Minister's Speech to Congress continues to be the "talk of the Conservatives".     President Obama said that there is a long-standing practice of not meeting foreign leaders in the midst of an election season.     This is as Senator McCain came out and said that relations with Israel are at an all-time low.   What Senator McCain apparently failed to underscore is the role of the current Israeli Prime Minister.  It will be interesting to see if the Livni-Herzog Partnership with the support of the unified Arab Slate can defeat the Prime Minister.  Our view is that it is going to be a nail-bitter especially as Israel has to contend with the chaos across the border in Syria.

Beyond the reality on the ground on the Middle East, there is Ukraine.   Reuters reported that Vladimir Putin is "worried about the situation in Eastern Ukraine".   This is as the Eastern Separist Leader called for a mass moblization of 100,000 Troops.    We here at Outsiders find it ppreplexing as to the tenacity of the separaists to sustain such a campaign as they have launched their latest onslaught.     There seems to be no talk of peace right now.

On a side note, we were amused when we saw reports of Iran's former President launching his new Website.  We had a chance to review it and could not help but be amused when we checked it out.  We were reminded of an open letter that the eminent scholar Dr. Sadegh Zibakalam of Tehran University sent out to him underscoring the fact that the people rejected him when they elected Hassan Rouhani President.  We underscored this during our morning round "On the Grid":

Mid-Term Elections in Iran are before us.   We here @ #outsiders continue to be optimistic about the prospects of a deal.   Yet, the dead-enders in Iran continue to be on the prowl as epitomized by a recent effort to recall the Foreign Minsiter, Dr. Zarif, to the Majlis (Parliament) for questions.   We also were quite taken aback by the recent tirade by the Majlis Speaker (and a former nuclear negotiator) about the "conduct" of the US.    We are in agreement with President Obama that not agreeing to a deal and the threat of renewed sanctions will again create a new challenge which the region does not need right now.

As we saw a perceptive report from Ann Curry on the roadmap to the deal, ,(and the very disturbing comment by Sheldon Adelson in the United States and the same dead-enders in Iran were at it too), our mind drifted back to the time Rouhani took the oath of office and the sentiment expressed in this classic YouTube clip:

Will we all have the courage to realize this sentiment?

An #Outsider Newsflash (2/1/2015) : On #FreeAJStaff & The Plight of Journalists

We here @ #Outsiders were gratified of the news that Peter Greste, the imprisoned Al Jazeera Journalist,  was released earlier today by Egypt and has been deported.      We join all around the World as  we call for the release of his colleagues as #FreeAJStaff continues for the detained Journalists along with their colleagues who have been convicted in absentia.

As we assessed this development, this was reported by +Haaretz.com on the Grid:

This is also a welcome development--even though the third team members will continue to be detained.   We also  remember all those who have continued to be detained in Egypt and throughout the World that we have remembered here @ #outsiders.   We also Jason Rezaian of the Washington Post who is supposed to be "tried" soon for unspecified crimes--The Washington Post latest is noted here for reference.

Journalism is Indeed not a crime.

Notations From the Grid On the Eve of a New Month: On the Sheer inhumanity of Dayesh

It is the dawn of a new month here in the #Outsider Network.   January is now history and it has been quite a challenging month.

We here @ #Outsiders were shocked beyond words by the cold-blooded murder of the Japanese Journalist Kenji Goto.    As we saw the reports over the "Grid", it was absolutely unbelievable as we noted this in our daily feed:

The Daesh Gang had said at one time that they wanted to trade his life and the life of the Jordanian Pilot for the life of the convicted suicide bomber sitting in a Jordanian Prison.    The Government of Jordan had asked for proof of life before the release.  As in the case of the cold-blooded murder of all others so far, the Daesh Gang has shown that they have no regard for life.     The Prime Minister of Japan spoke for the World when he underscored his anger at this senseless murder.    Gandhi Ji reflected upon how forgiveness was the attribute of the strong--because the weak can never forgive.  However, those who have done this unspeakable crime who have not heard the pleas of a Mother, a Wife and understood that this man had nothing to do with Japanese Government Policy can never be forgiven.

When one thinks Dayesh can't exceed the level of brutality and senseless act of purpose, this report shows the absolute lack of regard by Daesh:

How can one overcome such senselessness?

Notations for the Week-End (II): Missing #Madiba On this Tragic Day

As the shock of the senseless brutality of the latest Dayesh (also known as IS/Islamic State) continues to be before us, our thoughts this week-end drifted away to #Madiba.     In researching to share a clip for a comment we wanted to share on Facebook earlier,  we ran across this:

The humanity, broad vision and understanding of this man is ever so evident as all who tried to question his humanity and sense of purpose were addressed in such a beautiful way.  We could not help but wonder what Madiba would say if he was witness to such viciousness that defies a simple sense of humanity.    One leading Nasa Scientist was even more brutal:  How Humanity is ever so brutal on the "little piece of dust" that is Earth.

Oh how such beautiful souls are missed today as the World burns......

V-Thought For the Week: How Interesting On the State of Politics Today

As we here @ #Outsiders have been assessing the state of our affairs over the past 24 hours and assessed the view from Israel on the state of the pending Israeli Prime Minister, the Senator reminded me of the US Speaker of the House:

Notations On Our World: On Saudi Arabia & Beyond

A new era has arrived in Saudi Arabia as King Salman has taken the reign and has moved immediately to insure stability at the top.   An extent of the value the United States places is when the President cut short his visit to India to pay his respects--accompanied by a bi-partisan delegation of former Secretaries of State and key members of Congress:

Saudi Arabia is a challenging country as it changes.   King Abdullah's 20 year reign was tumultuous.    The Wahhabi Philosophy  continues to be at the forefront as beheadings continue and people continue to be persecuted for their beliefs--as the case of the Saudi Blogger sentenced to 1000 lashes is self-evident here.   But, it seems as if King Abdullah understood that he had to gradually change Saudi Arabia as noted in this snapshot published "On the Grid":

But, people will ask for more as Saudi Arabia will have to deal with a number of challenges around it--including the collapse of Yemen and the raging insurgency in Egypt.    As we went to press with this latest edition of "notations" we reviewed reports of Egyptians Soldiers being killed in a firefight with insurgents in the increasingly lawless Sinai Region.  The current count is 42 Soldiers--based on the latest reporting from Al Jazeera.

This past 24 hours has also seen an escalation of tensions between Hezbollah and Israel.   It was gratifying to see that Hezbollah has signaled that it is not interested in further escalating the conflict with Israel as Israeli Soldiers were killed in an apparent retaliation for an Israeli Drone Strike.  It was unfortunate how the Foreign Minister of Israel slammed the Israeli Prime Minister for showing restraint.

As such changes are at hand, the plight of the ordinary man and woman continues to be ignored.  Syrians and Iraqis continue to suffer as Palestinians continue their struggle for trying to survive from day to day.     Iraqi Forces are being accused of a massacre in Diyala province as lawlessness continues ever more.    The report from Jane Araaf at Al Jazeera is chilling on the details especially as Sunnis were targeted.

As the Middle East burns, what is ever so tragic is how the Young have been sacrified. One such brave voice spoke out which is noted below--it is telling how he expressed the  hope and the frustration of the future generation:

Notations On Our World: On the Latest on the Business Front

We here @ Outsiders have been blown away by what Apple announced.     The latest quarter saw one of the current stalwarts of Technology Today blowing away every single conceivable record.  It sold a record-breaking 74.3 Million iPhone!!  This translated to over 34,000 iPhone per hour.  Part of it is explained by what has been happening in China.   An iPhone has been selling as high as $ 2100.   One further measure of the extent of Apple's achievement is this:

This Company Earns More Than India's Top 50

Read story: http://profit.ndtv.com/news/tech-media-telecom/article-decoded-apples-record-quarterly-profit-of-18-billion-735401

Beyond the iPhone success, we also are anxious about the advent of Apple Watch.  There is a ship date for it--and all indications we've see are that it is going to be a hit.    Beyond iPhone and Apple Watch, though, some of the other Apple Businesses seem to be either stuck in neutral or not making much headway.    The iPad business continues to be stuck in neutral.    It was quite stark as to how the Economist noted this as it said, "..they are doing business the old fashioned way".      Although the World seems to be "on board" with Apple, Apple needs to be beyond a one or two hit wonder while some of the other businesses.   We will be continuing to assess it here throughout Outsiders.

Facebook came out with earnings today.   It exceeded expectations--but spending is also counting.  It is continuing to trade at all time high and it underscores that some 1.39 BILLION People use Facebook daily.     What we found ever so ironic was how Samsung has stumbled as it has.    They have had a 27% drop in their quarterly income due to how they've stumbled in the Mobile Space.

We have also been following the latest from two of the old stalwarths:  Yahoo & IBM.  Yahoo came out to announce that it was spinning off its' stake in Alibaba to a separate company.  There were some analysis that noted that Marissa Meyer would be losing her "Safety Net" when that in fact occurs as Yahoo tries to figure out where it fits in the changing landscape.    Alibaba itself is about to announce and interestingly enough has gotten into a war of words with a Chinese Regulator.    IBM is also on the horizon as it is about to go through a re-organization.  There were rumors of 100,000 Jobs going away--which was denied.

As our "Virtual Run" continues, we leave all with this perceptive Thought courtesy of +Jonathan Huie :

Notations On Our World Today: On the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz

It was ever so moving as our World was witness to remembering the martyrs of Auschwitz and the powerful clip by Stephen Spielberg was shown that reminded us all as we here @ outsiders assessed our World on the "Daily Run on the Grid":

There was one poignant call to action from one of the Survivors: "...We don't want our Past to be our Children's Future...".       Although the survivors will not be with us, all of us have an obligation to insure that a sense of humanity and love will prevail ever more in our World.   It is not an easy thing as The World is witness to the brutality of War in Ukraine, the rise of Antisemitism yet again in Europe, Islam phobia in Europe and the United states and the brutality of Daesh/Dash (also referred to as IS/Islamic State in the Western Media) in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Notations From the Grid: Some Good News

In assessing the Daily Status on the Grid, ran across these two which we here @ #Outsiders view as an affirmation of what is possible:

Not withstanding the action taken in the United States Senate, the World has gone beyond and the reality of Climate Change is something that has to be realized. It is also quite gratifying as people continue to be held to account for crimes against humanity: We shall overcome.

An "Outsider" Newsflash (II): Police in crisis as sixth top cop quits in disgrace - National - Israel News | Haaretz

Haaretz, once again, is in a reality check as it has continued to report on the true realities.   This latest has to do with Israeli National Police.   What is ironic is that the Israeli PM wants to lecture the World, yet he can't even keep his own house in order as Police in crisis as sixth top cop quits in disgrace - National - Israel News | Haaretz
