Briefly re: the current Israel-Gaza War

The situation in Gaza is dire.   Arab League has begun to flex its' muscle in a major way.   The Egyptian Prime Minister was there yesterday.    Egypt recalled its' Ambassador.   The Tunisian Foreign Minister was there earlier.  There is an Egyptian Parliamentary Delegation going forward.    Even Iran's Foreign Minister wants to go to Gaza if Egypt allows it.  This is in sharp contrast to 2009 when Hosni Mobarak basically did Israel's bidding.     This is as Electronic Intifada is on a prowl reporting out of Gaza as Israel continues onward with aerial assaults.   Electronic Intifada is reporting schools & hospitals are being targeted.

Statfor, despite its' recent controversy  does some good work and some "matter of fact" reporting which I view as contributing to the discourse right now.   In addition, I am glad to see NBC's Ayman Moyehdin, who did some great work during the last Gaza War for Al Jazeera, will be hosting a Google Hangout.   I hope to join it 2omorrow @ 12 PM EST US.   Here is the link for the Google Hangout:

I also sent a quick tweet out on the Stratfor update earlier and wanted to make sure it was noted with this write-up here: Update on the Israel-Gaza Conflict.   What is especially striking is how Iron Dome has not been as effective as it has been touted.

Will cooler heads prevail?

Achieving A Personal Milestone.....

I first began my adventure as a blogger with "ordinaryfaces".   I envisioned this platform to be an experiment.  The experiment evolved into a Personal Portal that also featured some of my writings in the other sites I had done.   I also wanted to evolve it further into a Personal Repoistory of key resources & ideas.   It has been quite a journey.

As Thanksgiving 2012 looms, I am celebrating one milestone:  1500 posts here in "ordinary faces".    I pray that the almighty grant me the continued strength and vision to continue contributing in my small way to the discourse in our World.

Israel & Hamas: What Now?

I am continuing to assess the war between Israel and Hamas.     For me, the symbol of it was a 4-Year Old Boy whose Father carried his body through the main hospital in Gaza City.    Hamas, though, has continued to fire rockets despite IRON DOME.   Missiles have landed outside of Tel Aviv and Jersuleam.

Weapons are coming from all sources.    At this stage, it really does not matter who started this latest round.    The Economist's KAL underscored the total stupidity of it all:

Jesse Jackson Jr. Has Some Nerve. :-(

So much promise....yet, another disappointment--what is the deal with such men having mistresses?

The US Elections & Its' Aftermath: An "Outsider's Perspective"

The election has been over and the fights have already begun.  The pundits and the leading political players have been at it for quite some time offering their views of the election, why Barack Obama won and what is the roadmap ahead.  I have also seen some commentary in the Orble Community.

I begin with this retrospective the President shared with his Election Team to share his thoughts on Victory:

For a normally reserved man, the strain had shown.    The campaign was well run on all fronts.   David Axerlod, Jim Messina & David Plouff understood what needed to be done and executed a flawless strategy  that focused on the States and assessed through a concerted turnout strategy.     This was an snapshot that was done by the Republican Polling Firm Resurrgent Republic:

When Resurgent Republic reported on this analysis, it did not account yet for the formal win In Florida.  The total count by the President was 332 Electoral Votes.  It was a definite win.  As Erick Erickson noted, "....
He did not win by stealing the election. Voter irregularities always happen. It is one reason we support voter ID rules. But even in the worse scenario of reports out there, there were not enough tales of voter irregularities to matter nationwide. .."   What I found kind of refershing is how the acknowledgement of the huge win by the President was acknowledged by all.   Even Roy Blount, the no.3 US Senate Republican Leader, acknowledged how they were all wrong in how they assessed the election.     He won fair and square--and that's the bottom line that all have noted.

After the euphoria of the re-election, it was of course back to work as the United States is facing the so-called "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and spending cuts.       The day after saw the beginning of the postmortems.    I have seen a realization by some of the leading lights in the Republican Party about how they have to change fully realizing that America has changed.    Many of the so-called pundits (including Newt Gingrich and DIck Morris) recognized how wrong they were.   However, Karl Rove has not seemed to understand that and has even doubled down.   His Super Pac spent over 150 Million Dollars and had basically nothing to show for it.    His saving grace was that it could have been worst.

Some leading lights lost.     One of the stalwarts of the Tea Party, Allen West, lost his seat.  The Mack Family (both Mary Bono Mack and Connie Mack) lost their seats.    If the 2010 redistricting had not occurred, The Democrats would have taken the House Back.   They were able to increase their hold on the US Senate though.      Eric Cantor, the House Majority Leader, was not in real trouble--but as Joe Scarborough of MSNBC's morning Joe noted, he has a lot to think about since Virginia was won by the President.

Some of the apparent aspirants to the Office in 2016 have begun distancing themselves already from the failed election of 2012.    Bobby Jindhal, the Governor of Louisiana, has begun this process by noting that the American Electroate must not be divided and Republicans have to be an inclusive party.  I have seen statements like "stopping being the stupid party" which provides further hope that there is this opportunity for a transformation and a genuine attempt to transform the Republican Party.    Michael Steele, the former Chair of the Party, was as frustrated as any Republican as I had seen.   David Frum, George W. Bush's former Speechwriter who was deemed a RINO (Republican in Name Only) for years noted how the so-called Conservative Entertainment Complex had taken over the Conservative Movement as epitomized by the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.

Some of the players in the House seem to think that many of the ideas the Republicans campaigned on continues to hold water--despite the election.   Paul Ryan noted as such as he said that the Country voted for "divided government".     John Boehner has also again signaled that he is not ready for a deal on Taxes.   Boehner noted how "reasonable" he was and how the President knew it.  I laughed at it in light of what they did when their unwillingness to negotiate drove the US to the edge of default.   I also am amazed by Mitch McConnell.   He seems not to have realized that there was an election.  Peter Hartcher of the Sydney Morning Herald noted how Superman (aka Barack Obama) had 54 days to save the World and how his biggest challenge was to deal with the terrorist cell otherwise known as the US Congress.   Although I have profound reservations about calling the US Congress a Terrorist Cell, I wondered after the latest rhetoric coming out of US House especially as they staked out their positions in anticipation of discussions on the "fiscal cliff".     MItch McConnell may also have a fight on his hands if Ashley Judd decided to challenge him for his Seat in 2014.

As the "Civil War" within the Republican Party has begun,  Mitt Romney held a conference call where he noted that the reason the President won was because of the "Gifts" he had given to key constituencies.   Romney managed to antagonize everyone.  What was striking is how he did not realize his own shortcomings throughout the campaign.     The audio was captured and played on US Media.   Many leading Republican Lights rejected the notion and underscored again how it is the Republicans who have to change as the Country has changed.

The World has breathed a sigh of relief when the election was decided.  .  There are many challenges that continue to remain though.    The Middle East right now continues to burn.    China is in the midst of a leadership transfer and presents profound challenges to the United States.  Congressional hearings on Benghazi have begun and there are calls for a Select Committee to investigate it all.    David Petreaus, the former Director and retired General, is slated to testify after having resigned due to his personal indiscretion.  I caught excerpts of the hearing whereby the Republicans are claiming that the Obama Administration lied.

It is going to be quite a show..

The Week That Was.......

Released @ http://www.outsiderviews.com/what-a-week/4/, retrieved 11/15/2012

It has been 9 Days since Barack Obama has been re-elected to a Second Term as President.    The post-Morten on the election is continuing onward.     I have been assessing it and will be releasing an "Americas Watch" soon as I also assess the on-going transformational change in China.   The posturing has begun in earnest.   It includes a new broadside launched by John McCain and Lindsey Graham against the Administration in regards to Benghazi.   I found the tit-for-tat yesterday playing out on US Cable News Networks to be quite hilarious and funny.

Beyond the shores of America, though, what I find dreadful is to continue to observe Europe.   Eurozone is currently back in  Recession right now.    Greece continues to burn.   France has stalled.   Almost 1 in 7 Spaniards are without work.    Although Britain in not in the Euro Zone, the Governor of the Bank of England warned that the UK is in danger of a triple-dip recession.     It appears though that European Governments are not listening to the street.

Beyond Europe, there is the Middle East.    What I find extremely worrisome is the launch of Operation "Pillar of Defense" by Israel.  Israel killed the leader of Hamas Military Wing while he was traveling in his car.   Hamas has responded with a multitude of rockets being fired into Israel.    The Government has authorized the Israeli Defense Force to do what needs to be done.   As I write this, the Middle East Monitor is reporting that Israel has bombed locations near the Rafah Crossing.    One of the reports based in Gaza has just reported the latest list of Palestinian Casualties:

1-Walid Abadlah, 2 years
2-Marwan Abu Al-Qumsan, 52
3- Ramai Hamamd
4- Khalid Abu Al-Naser
5- Habes mesbeh, 30
6-Wael Al-Ghalban
7- Hicham Al-Ghalban
8- Ahmad Al-Jaabari, 52, Hamas top military commander
9-Mohamamd Al-Hams
10- Ranan Arafat, 5
11-Essam Abu El-Mazzah, 20
12-Hani Al-Kaseeh, 18
13- Ahmad Al-Masharawi, 11 months old
14- Hiba Al-Masharwai, 19 "woman"
15- Mahmaoud Sawaween, 65

In addition, the last report I have seen note that over 150 people have so far been injured injured so far including many women and children.     One of the Missiles launched from Gaza has landed south of Tel Aviv.  It appears to be an Iranian-Developed Fajr-5 Missile.    Egypt has recalled its Ambassador and apparently is cutting off delivery of certain resources and Suez Canal Access.    The problem is that The Israeli Prime Minister is facing an election and will not necessarily back down.      If another invasion of Gaza in fact occurs, it will further destabilize a region that is dominated by the Civil War in Syria, the sectarian conflict in Iraq and the continued challenge of Iran.    This is as Jordan has seen waves of Protests, Lebanon is unstable, Kuwait is faced with protests and Bahrain's tensions continue onward as the National Guard was deployed to quell the most recent unrest.

Never a dull moment.....

An Interesting Week

Quite a Week...

  Never a Dull Moment....
Source:  http://www.outsiderviews.com/quite-a-week/

Barack Obama has been re-elected to a second Term as President of the United States. I have been assessing the "day after" and will be releasing an "Americas Watch" soon. What is quite amazing is the nature of his win as the details continue to emerge on the reach of his and how he was able to help the down tickets quite a bit. I was also amazed to see how he won New Jersey with 61 percent of the Vote.

The Speaker of the House, John Boehner, has been making the interview rounds and gave a speech noting how he yearns to be led by President Obama. He has acknowledged the fact that "Obamacare" is now law of the land and is open to revenue increases. He has also noted the fact that the GOP has a lot of work to do. It seems, though, that many others within the so-called Conservative Movement have yet to fully accept the President's Win of both the popular vote and the electoral college vote despite the massive onslaught by the Super PACS. Karl Rove's so-called Charity spent over 100 Million Dollars and his result was: zero. Karl Rove questioning Fox News' Call during election night was hilarious. Megyn Kelly actually had to walk to the elections desk at Fox News to dispute Karl Rove's contention.

This month, though, begins a month of celebration. Thanksgiving is upon us in the United States. This week-end is also Veterans Day. It began as Armistice Day when Germany surrendered on the 11th Day at the 11th Hour and ended World War I. It is now celebrated as a day to remember all who have served and continue to serve even now. As the Veterans are honored, it is also absolutely crucial to note that their families must also be honored and remembered. The families have served right by them. I never forget when one of my cousins wrote about how blessed she was after a base her husband had served in Afghanistan was attacked by suicide bombers three days after he left for Kuwait. How can such sacrifices ever be repaid? All I know is that they must not be forgotten..and they will not be:

Witness to Democracy: Brief Thoughts

Team,

I am excited about America  this morning as we are choosing our President tonight..

I have had hardly any sleep as I gear up to hit the road  in a few hours to serve as an Elections Officer for my Local County.    I reflected upon some of the excitement with some of  my online students earlier.    MSNBC's "morning Joe" is playing in the background and the pundits are again at it to think about and decide     I saw President Obama  last night during his last campaign stop of what has been a remarkable 15-year rise to the highest office in the land.     Whatever happens by midnight Eastern in the United States, one thing will continue to be clear:  In America, there is still that sense that anything is possible...and that if  the Son of a Single Mother with a different last name is able to make it if he tries...that anything is possible.    I remembered, as I listened to his last speech in Iowa last night, when I first noticed him in 2004 when I was in Chicago as he was running for the US Senate.    How time flies....

I reflected upon this as I shared these "thoughts" also earlier...the possiblities are limitless..and we must always aim to climb the highest mountain, overcome our fears and remember that nothing is impossible:

It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.
- Edmund Hillary

There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere,
and many of us will have to pass
through the valley of the shadow of death
again and again before we reach
the mountaintop of our desires.
- Nelson Mandela

I just want to do God's will.
And he's allowed me to go to the mountain.
And I've looked over, and I've seen the promised land!
I may not get there with you,
but I want you to know tonight that
we as a people will get to the promised land.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

It isn't the mountain ahead that wears you out;
it's the grain of sand in your shoe.
- Robert W. Service

As November 6 Looms......

One of the best cases I have seen is by the long-time astute Middle East Reporter Brzou Daragahi.    He wrote about it on his Facebook Page and the comments speaks for itself.      He made the case for Obama in as straightforward a way as possible.     It will be a very interesting day...and a very long day!!!

Borzou Daragahi

I know some people find Obama a disappointment, and I agree with many of the critiques, especially on Middle East policy. But think about the choice before you. At least Obama is a relatively moderate, normal, well-read, well-informed global citizen. The Republican Party, on the other hand, has become a repository for demagoguery and chauvinism both in the US and abroad. Don't think of voting as some kind of transcendental, quasi-religious act that defines you in any kind of moral way. Think of it as a tactical maneuver to stave off the GOP's tide of insanity.

Will "Sandy" Wake Us Up?

Superstorm Sandy is finally forcing all to face some harsh realities.     I had a student of mine just tell me that he took a shower for the first time in five days.    This is the new normal--whether we like to accept it or not.  It all begins with realizing this:

As Election Day Arrives in the US.......

Source: http://www.outsiderviews.com/now-that-president-obama-is-back-on-the-campaign-trail/

As it stands now, the verdict by the pundits is still open. Erick Erickson, the Red State Editor, has noted that the Election is Romney's to lose. Yet, Nate Silver of the New York Times is giving the President a 79% chance winning with 300 Electoral Votes. But, his actual analysis of it is a bit more somber when his most up to date commentary is read which I have noted in the link for reference:

 http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/31/oct-30-what-state-polls-suggest-about-the-national-popular-vote/

I have noted that the election is President Obama's to lose. I view it as ever more so in light of the past few days as he has dealt with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Not withstanding my own views, what is absolutely vital is that everyone votes. People have given up their lives to fight for this right. People are in prison for having had the courage to speak up for that right. I am specifically thinking of the Sakharov Prize Winners: Nasrin Soutodeh and Jaffar Panahi of Iran who have been either in prison or under house arrest since the advent of the Green Revolution.   This beautiful tribute was done for Nasrin as she lingers on in Prison:

I am also remembering Iran's Green Movement Leaders, Mir Hossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karoubi who continue to endure house arrest.

I look forward to the post-election analysis and assessment on November 7.

Thought 4 the Week

“Security is mostly a superstition.
It does not exist in nature,
nor do the children of men as a whole experience it.
Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run
than outright exposure.
Life is either a daring adventure,
or nothing.”
~ Helen Keller
